Caryophyllene Terpene Explained

Eleanor Gomez • Aug 03, 2021

Caryophyllene can be found in many essential oils -- especially clove, rosemary, black pepper, hops and Sativa cannabis strains. It has a spicy, woody flavor and smells similar to cinnamon and cloves. It's a potent component in anti-inflammatory salves and topicals. And what sets it apart is its unique ability to bind to CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) when consumed orally. Cannabis strains with high concentrations of Caryophyllene include OG Kush, Sour Diesel, Chemdawg and Skywalker OG.

Caryophyllene Characteristics

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The Endocannabinoid System is named after the plant (cannabis) that led to its discovery. It is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis -- the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.
